Literacy in Action guides teachers and instructional leaders through the process of implementing evidence-based reading instruction. Educators gain knowledge and skills through micro lessons that connect reading theory to daily classroom routines and instructional materials.
Literacy in Action is system-wide professional development for leaders and teachers shifting to structured literacy. Literacy in Action supports biliteracy instruction, aligns with grade-level TEKS, and includes:
online lesson with a “chunk” of science-of-reading knowledge
grade-level instruction tools for classroom application
training and slides for campus “trainer of teachers” (e.g., instructional coaches)
classroom resources and posters
Building the Capacity of Literacy Leaders
Literacy in Action builds the capacity of district literacy leaders (teachers, campus “trainers of teachers” and administrators). Educators apply “chunks” of reading theory to instructional practice through a series of micro lessons delivered over time. Each Literacy in Action lesson is followed by a period of classroom practice and instructional coaching, which allows teachers connect knowledge to practice.
Multiyear Process
Shifting to structured literacy is inordinately challenging work that requires leadership, teamwork and time. Each series of micro lessons covers eight high yield topics and lasts one academic year. The first series supports the shift to structured literacy. The second series delves deeper into the reading brain to master reading instruction. The third series focuses on sustaining structured literacy.
